How to: Clean drinking water

Let’s chat about something super important – clean drinking water on the road. Whether you’re cruising in an RV, overlanding, towing a caravan, hiking, biking, or motorcycling, having safe water to drink is non-negotiable. And trust me, a good water filter is your best friend out there!

I’ve been zipping around in my RV for years now, hitting up over 45 countries. Let me tell you, the water quality can be a real wild card compared to what we’re used to back in Denmark. My first year on the road? I was buying bottled water all over Eastern Europe. But then I got smart and installed a water filter. What a life-changer!

This nifty little gadget does it all – kicks out bacteria, parasites, funky smells, weird colors, and even that nasty chlorine, plastic, or metallic taste. I’ve got mine set up right after the water tank, so I know every drop coming out of my tap is good to go.

Think about it – no more lugging around plastic bottles, no more hunting for places to toss them, and hey, Mother Nature will thank you too! The filter cartridge is a breeze to maintain – just swap it out every 5,000 liters or about every six months.

There are a bunch of different filters out there. I switched to a Reich filter after my old one got clogged up. (Though who knows, maybe it was the water’s fault, not the filter’s! 😂)

Here are some extra tips that’ll come in handy, especially when you’re outside Denmark:

1. Use a watering can instead of a hose. Yeah, it might take a bit longer, but you can see exactly what’s going into your tank.
2. Always use your own hoses. Those public ones at rest stops? They’re often used to clean toilets. Yuck!
3. If you do use a hose, let it run for a bit first. Make sure that water looks good before it hits your tank.

Bottom line? I’m done with plastic bottles for good. It’s not just great for the planet, but my wallet’s pretty happy too. And the best part? I can finally stop obsessing over finding clean water sources everywhere I go.
