AYO HANSEN
Author, Writer & Globetrotter
Let me tell you about this wild ride I’m on as an adventurer. It’s not just about the places I go; it’s a whole way of life. I’ve got this tiny home on wheels – my Land Rover Defender – and it’s taught me how to live with less and love it even more.
Every morning, I wake up and brew my coffee the old-fashioned way. It’s just one cup, but it makes my day start with a blast. I stand there, sipping it slowly, watching the steam rise into the chilly air. It takes a while, but that’s okay. Everything takes longer out here, and that’s all part of the charm.
I’m Ayo, a 44-year-old globetrotter who decided to write my own story of freedom and discovery.
My roots are a mix of Danish and Greek, and I grew up with the whisper of trees in one of Denmark’s most beautiful forests, not far from the city of Silkeborg. But eight years ago, I had an itch that couldn’t be scratched by staying put. So I sold almost everything, waved goodbye to my cozy Copenhagen apartment, and set up camp – literally – in the woods.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I swapped my tent for a home on wheels, an old Volkswagen. I traded in my “normal” life for something extraordinary – a life of tight budgets, minimalism, and endless adventures. Seven years on, and I’ve never looked back.
But then, fate stepped in. Denmark’s largest motorhome dealer, and Erwin Hymer Group Nord, came knocking with an offer I couldn’t refuse. For four years, I got to drive around in the most amazing RV’s you can imagine!
This partnership opened many possibilities, made life more accessible, and gave me incredible freedom. The motorhomes were practical, well-designed, and easy to handle – even when my lungs weren’t cooperating. But all good things come to an end, and in late August 2024, it was time for my own set of wheels, as I decided not to continue with a new RV dealer. I want to write my own story and roll my own set of wheels, which I now do in my Land Rover Defender, which is everything I, as an overlander, could ever dream of.
I don’t think this is some glossy magazine version of Van Life. It’s real, it’s raw, and it’s fantastic. I’m not chasing perfect sunsets – I’m after the real stuff. The belly laughs with locals, swapping stories around a campfire, meafinding beauty in the rough and tumble of it all. Every day, I turn a corner, and boom! There’s a whole new world to explore.
This life doesn’t fit in a neat little package, and that’s what makes it so damn exciting. I always meet new people, whether trudging through a forest or wandering down a quiet street in some tiny village. It’s wild how chatting with a stranger can open your eyes to so much!
Living like this means I’ve ditched everything I don’t need—no useless gadgets, no clutter—just me, my Defender, and the open road. I’m not collecting things anymore—I’m collecting experiences. Every stop is a new chapter in this crazy story I call life.
So, if you’re wondering what it’s like to be an adventurer at heart, picture this: You wake up every day to a world that’s just waiting to be explored. That morning coffee? It’s an invitation to connect with the world around you. Every sunrise screams, “Hey, let’s see what’s out there!”
This isn’t just living in a Defender – it’s living life full throttle, fueled by the thrill of what’s around the next bend and the warmth of the people you meet along the way.
So come on, let’s hit the road and live life bold, free, and unapologetically adventurous!
