Safety on the road

Safety as a female solo traveler

Let’s talk about something that’s not always easy to talk about – the #metoo movement and how it affects our adventures around the world.

I remember when I first set foot in a southern country as a bright-eyed young adult, ready to care for kids and soak up the culture. Man, was I in for a surprise! The warm smiles, the expressive hand gestures, the sun-kissed faces – it was all so captivating. But I quickly realized that things worked a bit differently there, especially for us ladies.

So, I did what any smart traveler would do – I watched and learned from the local women. And oh, did I learn fast! Now, I want to share some of my hard-earned wisdom with you. Whether you’re flying solo or traveling with little ones in tow, these tips might just save your bacon.

First things first – when in Rome, do as the Romans do, right? If you see the local women keeping to themselves and not chatting up the guys, follow their lead. Don’t be afraid to stand your ground and expect the same treatment they get. You’ve got this!

Now, I know we all want to look cute on our trips, but sometimes it’s better to blend in with the crowd. No, wearing more conservative clothes doesn’t mean you’re asking for less respect – absolutely not! But it can help you avoid unwanted attention and make your trip a whole lot smoother.

Here’s a biggie – nighttime safety. I’ll be honest, I didn’t always follow this advice in my younger days. But trust me, it’s smart to head home when the locals do. And when you need a ride, make sure it’s a legit taxi. Better safe than sorry, right?

Got a ring? Wear it! Even if you’re not hitched, sometimes it’s easier to say you are. It can be a real lifesaver when you’re traveling solo and someone gets a bit too nosy about your relationship status. Get creative and come up with a story about why you’re exploring on your own.

In some places, especially in the Middle East, being older or having a family can actually work in your favor. As a young, single gal, you might stick out like a sore thumb. But if you’re a mom? Instant respect! It’s just how things work in some cultures.

Last but not least – try to pick up some local lingo. You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing a few key phrases can make a world of difference. It shows respect for the culture and can help you out of sticky situations.

Remember, traveling is all about new experiences and stepping out of your comfort zone. But it’s also about being smart and staying safe. So go out there, have a blast, and make some unforgettable memories!
