Myths and Legends of Romania

Explore the Enchanting Folklore of the Carpathians

Let me take you through Romania – a country that’s way more than just Dracula’s stomping grounds. Trust me, I’ve been there, done that, and I’m here to spill the tea on this hidden gem of Eastern Europe.

You’re cruising down the Transfagarasan highway, wind in your hair, jaw dropped at the insane mountain views. Jeremy Clarkson called it the world’s best road, and after my adventures there in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, I gotta say – the man’s not wrong!

But Romania isn’t just about epic drives. It’s like stepping into a time machine. One minute you’re bouncing along bumpy roads past horse-drawn carts and kids playing in fields, the next you’re wandering through medieval towns that look straight out of a fairytale.

Speaking of fairytales, let’s talk about those shepherds. These guys are the real deal, living up in the Carpathian Mountains with their flocks, dogs, and donkeys. It’s a tough life, but there’s something kinda poetic about it, you know? And don’t even get me started on the myths and legends around these mountain men – we’re talking some serious storytelling gold here.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But what about Dracula?” Well, let me tell you about this tiny cabin I stayed in near Ciresni. You’re riding up a mountain on horseback at dusk, guided by an old man with a white beard. You arrive at this cozy little hut with a comfy bed and views for days. As night falls, you’re surrounded by starry skies and the distant howl of wolves. If that doesn’t scream “Transylvania,” I don’t know what does!

But Romania isn’t all misty mountains and spooky vibes. The cities are a whole other story. Imagine colourfull houses, cobblestone streets that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, and enough UNESCO World Heritage sites to make your head spin.

Now, I gotta keep it real with you. Romania’s got its challenges. There’s a pretty big gap between rich and poor, and lots of young people are heading out of the country for better opportunities. But, the people who stay? Some of the kindest, most welcoming folks you’ll ever meet!

If you’re into nature, Romania’s got you covered. We’re talking emerald-green rivers, massive underground salt mines, and even mud volcanoes (yeah, you read that right). And if you’re brave enough, you can explore some of the 400+ caves in the Apuseni region – including one that’s a mind-blowing 47 km long!

For all you adrenaline junkies out there, the Transfagarasan and Transalpina roads are must-drives. Just be prepared for some serious twists and turns – and maybe keep an eye out for wild bears!

Before I wrap this up, let me give a shoutout to this cool initiative called Natura in Bucate. These guys are all about promoting local, organic food and supporting small farmers. If you want to taste the real Romania and help out the local community, definitely check them out!

So there you have it, my little love letter to Romania. It’s a country full of surprises, from its stunning landscapes to its rich culture and warm-hearted people. Trust me, once you visit, you’ll be planning your next trip back before you even leave. Happy travels!
